Barely four weeks to May 29, the first year anniversary of the incumbent government of the All Progressives Congress (APC), indications emerged yesterday that the presidency and the leadership of the ruling party may not have any plan to roll out drums in celebration.
The APC-led government was sworn-in at the federal level on May 29, last year, after it successfully defeated the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the poll.
Blueprint exclusively gathered from reliable sources yesterday that as at the time of filing this report, both the presidency and the Organising Secretary’s office of the party, had not issued or received any directive as regards schedule of events to mark both the party’s victory and its first year in power, unlike the practice under past administrations since the country’s return to democracy in 1999.
One of the sources, a chieftain of the party, agreed that the party had not delivered much on its change mantra as expected since assumption of power; hence the issue of rolling out drums should not arise.
The source said: “The party may not go on elaborate celebration of the first year in office for now, not only because there is no money to do this, but we must also bear in minds that this is an era of change and the time of frivolous spending on events with little or no positive effect on citizens must be stopped.”
The APC chieftain believed that all the present government has been able to do is to lay good foundations for developments to thrive.
“By the time the result of all these concerted efforts in the name of sacrifices being put in place by this government continue to manifest, and these begin to germinate and yield the right results, then most Nigerians will have cause to thank the APC government and especially, President Muhammadu Buhari.”
Another Presidency source who spoke with our correspondent, said by now, Nigerians should begin to understand the present leadership under Buhari.
“President Buhari is not a type of leader who engages in premature celebration. By the time the implementation of 2016 budget begins, Nigerians will have reasons to appreciate him the more.
“Though, for now I don’t know the manner in which the federal government plans to mark the one year in office, but I can tell you that the issue of elaborate celebration is out of it.”
When contacted on phone to comment on the matter, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said: “I don’t know for now but I doubt. The President is not that type of President who will roll out drums but I will find out later, today is just May 3.”3
